Hank Thomas is a dental hygienist and divorced father of two who gets no respect from his family or his community, this despite the fact that he is an honest and hard-working man who selflessly volunteers his time for the local youth sports leagues, including as a referee for his most fondly-held sport – youth football. Hank’s shrew of an ex-wife, Nadine, remarries a prominent dentist and cruelly works to diminish Hank within the dental field and with his own children. Hank is forced from his chosen profession to become a groundskeeper for the youth sports league whose dysfunctional management are the only ones how hold him an any regard. When the NFL referees go on strike and threaten the coming season, Hank tries out and gains a spot as a replacement ref in an effort to save the NFL season as well as the hopes of the loyal fans throughout the nation. Hank is routinely confronted by a comically vindictive cadre of union refs, and burdened by the outlandish mishaps and mistaken calls of some of his fellow replacement referees. However, Hank carries on undaunted, ultimately winning the respect of a nation of fans as well as his children.
